The architecture practice 'Squire and Partners' in Kings Cross explained how they use models to sell their designs. Some fabulous computer generated models are on show in their office which are half and half computer generated/touched up by the architects. They gave me an old wooden model which was fully hand made, it was great, perfect for a childs doll house so thats what it became!

Start!
After seeing all of these models I visited two of Londons most renound model shops:
-4D modelshop The Railway Arches, 120 Leman Street, London E1 8EU
-Atlantis Art Materials 7-9 Plumber's Row, London E1 1EQ
I found some great materials in the 4D model shop, such as lead sheet, UV Rods and scaled people, the latter was more of an arts materials warehouse
Back in the studio I explored these materials and made a model of Danier Parken from my recent trip to Malmo, Sweden. I kept in mind the philosophy of 'Farm' model and used recycled materials I found in skips and on old notice boards. I used shingle (from wicks) and balsa wood (from local art shop) to give a realistic and high quality finish. The 1:100 people allowed me to use the model to demonstrate the feeling of walking through the space

More Models

Near to the AA is the NLA aka 'New London Architecture' on Store Street. The current exhibition sports some amazing models, the most interresting is the 1:1500 model of Central London, for its shear size and in humane nature, it looks like pleasent ville where every edge is perfect, the plastic scaled people would fit in well! The model does have many good qualities however it shows Londond current development projects.

Visitors can relate to the model and orient themselves within it. The incredible level of detail is kept user friendly with simple colours being kept to a minimum.

nla also has examples of perfected design models for whats happening now and next in London by professional model makers ie
Thorp Modelmakers

The models were impressive in detail and the perfect state they were in wqs unbeleivable, some were protected by glass cases! However most of them lacked human quality, it was obvious that they were 95% computerised. Though dimensions were clear I could not imagine the feel of the space and did not get excited about the proposals as i did with the Mega Farm!

modelling mayhem

Focussing on modelling was fantastic! Here's what I got up to for one week in November:

Rob Voeman's exhibition at the Architectural Association (Bedford Square, London) -Bad Buildings, Good Spaces
Inspiring! He is experimental with cheap simplistic materials and creates interresting and interactive models, one of his models was made from wood and glass, it was a beautiful, abstract explosion on the outside and a car inside- we climbed in!
Mega Farm

The Mega Farm was my favorite! It was part of 'Archipancturale' exhibition in 2004 and I could imagine the earthly experience of the building due to the slightly messy, hand made technique. The lighting, invited you to imagine the interior spaces of the model. Nice!
